Our Black River Blend is a meticulously crafted bonsai substrate, developed to meet the needs of discerning artists and novices alike. This balanced, free-draining mix combines the essential elements of time-honored Japanese soil science with modern horticultural enhancements. Particle size 3/8-1/4″.

• 34% Akadama – A Japanese clay granule prized for its relatively high cation exchange capacity, water retention and slow breakdown, encouraging fine root development. Imported from Japan.
• 33% Hyuga Pumice – This lightweight volcanic stone promotes aeration and nutrient exchange. Imported from Japan.
• 33% Black & Red Lava Rock (Scoria) – Adds structure, drainage, water holding capacity, and mineral diversity for a healthy root zone.

To further enrich the mix, we’ve fortified it with Probio Carbon Biochar—a carbon rich medium which has the ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere and is enriched with plant growth promoting bacteria Bacillus subtilis. It supports beneficial microbial life, improves nutrient retention, and enhances overall soil vitality.

Ideal for conifers, deciduous trees, and broadleaf evergreens, the Black River Blend is suitable for both repotting mature bonsai and developing young stock.
